Tokens first
Design tokens — colour, spacing, typography, radius, motion — are the foundation. Defining them once and consuming them everywhere (CSS variables, Tailwind theme, native apps) keeps every surface consistent and makes rebrands or dark mode a configuration change instead of a rewrite.
Component architecture that scales
- Build on accessible primitives so keyboard navigation, focus management and ARIA are correct by default.
- Prefer composition over configuration: small parts that combine, rather than one component with fifty props.
- Express variants explicitly (size, intent, state) so usage stays predictable.
- Keep business logic out of the system; it should render, not fetch.
Documentation and governance
Adoption depends on trust. Live examples, usage guidelines and a visible changelog make it easy to do the right thing. A lightweight contribution process lets product teams propose new patterns without the system becoming a bottleneck.
Test what users see
Visual regression tests catch unintended changes across hundreds of components, while automated accessibility checks guard against regressions that are easy to miss in review. Semantic versioning lets consuming apps upgrade on their own schedule.
